What is Drink Tea for MND?

Getting involved and helping MND Queensland raise much needed funds & awareness is easy through our Drink Tea for MND campaign.

All you need to do is Host a Drink Tea for MND event!

Drink Tea for MND events can be hosted anytime, anywhere. Drink Tea for MND is an event that knows no boundaries, so everybody can be involved. Any event (big or small), any activity, any act, can be a part of raising awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.

With our annual MND Awareness Week 7—13 May and MND Global Day on 21 June now is the perfect time to start planning your Drink Tea for MND event. Give your event a theme or combine it with a staff meeting, birthday, anniversary or other commemorative occasion. And always remember the gold coin donation for MND Qld!

Some theme suggestions : Cornflower Blue -get your guests to dress in blue or serve your tea in blue cups; Tea ‘n’ Tarts - put on the kettle, bake your favourite tart and share it with your work colleagues; T-bag in the Park - pack your morning tea in a bag, take your cuppa and spend some time relaxing with friends outdoors; Crazy Tea Party -  don’t worry if your cups and saucers don’t match, mismatch them to make it crazy.

Madura Tea has joined in support of MND Qld, supplying a range of Madura tea bags for organised Drink Tea for MND events. So register your event with us on the form overleaf to receive your starter pack!

What is MND?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells—neurones controlling the muscles that enable us to move around, speak, breath and swallow—fail to work normally.

With no nerves to activate them, muscles gradually weaken and waste.  The patterns of weakness vary from person to person.

Early symptoms of MND are often mild, and may include stumbling due to weakness of the leg muscles, difficulty holding objects due to weakness of the hand muscles, slurring of speech or swallowing difficulties due to weakness of the tongue and throat muscles.   The effects of MND—initial symptoms, rate and pattern of progression, and survival time after diagnosis—vary significantly from person to person.

For most people with MND the intellect and memory are not affected, nor are the senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.  The bowels and bladder are not affected by the disease, although diet and exercise should be carefully monitored.

The cause of MND is not known and at present there is no effective treatment and no cure.  However, encouraging progress is being made by co-ordinated research across the world.

There are several forms of MND.  The most common form is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).  ALS is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in the USA.
